Fire Prevention on Construction Sites

Talking points
- At least one fire extinguisher rated 2A or higher is required for every 3,000 square feet of building area on a construction site.
- The travel distance to a Class A extinguisher must not exceed 100 feet. For Class B (flammable liquid) hazards, the distance is 50 feet.
- All extinguishers must be visually inspected monthly and receive annual maintenance. Record the date and inspector's initials on the tag.
- In construction, a 55-gallon water drum with two pails or a 1/2-inch garden-type hose discharging 5 gallons per minute may substitute for a 2A-rated extinguisher.
- Keep access routes to extinguishers clear at all times. In an emergency, seconds matter — a blocked extinguisher is useless.
Ask the crew
Can you point to the nearest fire extinguisher from where you're standing right now — and is it the right type for this area?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
