Fire Extinguisher Use and Inspection

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Remember PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side.
  2. In general industry, the maximum travel distance to a Class A extinguisher is 75 feet — shorter than the 100-foot construction allowance.
  3. Monthly visual inspections check: pressure gauge in the green zone, pin and tamper seal intact, no visible damage or corrosion, and clear access.
  4. Annual maintenance must be performed by a qualified professional per NFPA 10. Internal examination is required every 6 years.
  5. Only fight a fire if it is small (incipient stage), you have a clear escape route, the extinguisher is the correct type, and you have been trained. Otherwise, evacuate and call 911.

Ask the crew

Has everyone on this crew been trained on how to use a fire extinguisher — and do you feel confident doing it?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
