Falls from Vehicles and Equipment

Talking points
- Falls from trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and flatbeds are a leading cause of construction injuries. Most occur during mounting, dismounting, or loading and unloading.
- Use three points of contact when climbing on or off any vehicle or equipment — two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Face the vehicle and use the steps and handholds provided.
- Never jump from a truck bed, flatbed trailer, or piece of equipment. Even a 4-foot jump onto uneven ground can cause ankle fractures, knee injuries, or back injuries.
- Wet, muddy, or icy steps and handholds cause most vehicle-related falls. Clean them before use, and wear boots with adequate tread.
- Flatbed trucks and trailers should have edge protection or fall prevention measures when workers are loading, unloading, or securing materials at height.
Ask the crew
Are you using three points of contact every time you get on and off equipment — and are the steps clean and in good condition?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
