Fall Protection PPE — Harness Inspection

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Inspect your harness before every use: check all webbing for cuts, burns, fraying, chemical damage, UV degradation, and broken stitching.
  2. Check all buckles, D-rings, and grommets for cracks, distortion, sharp edges, and corrosion. If hardware is bent or cracked, remove the harness from service.
  3. The dorsal D-ring (center of the back, between the shoulder blades) is the primary fall arrest attachment point. Other D-rings are for positioning or retrieval only.
  4. A harness must properly fit each worker per the 2025 PPE fit rule. A too-loose harness can shift during a fall and cause injury; too-tight restricts movement and blood flow.
  5. Any harness that has arrested a fall must be immediately removed from service and inspected by a competent person. Most manufacturers recommend replacement after any fall arrest.

Ask the crew

Put your harness on right now and have a partner check the fit — is it snug without restricting your movement?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
