Fall Protection for Smaller Workers
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- The 2025 PPE fit rule requires that fall protection harnesses properly fit each individual worker. A standard 'M/L' harness does not fit everyone safely.
- Harnesses that are too large allow excessive slack, which increases freefall distance, arrest force, and the risk of the worker sliding out during a fall.
- Manufacturers now offer harnesses in XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL with adjustable torso length. The dorsal D-ring must sit between the shoulder blades — not at the lower back or the neck.
- Smaller workers may have different clearance distance requirements. Run the calculation: anchorage height minus harness stretch, deceleration distance, worker height, and a safety factor. Ensure adequate clearance below.
- Pregnancy, body shape, and individual proportions all affect harness fit. A harness that fit last month may not fit today. Re-check fit regularly and provide alternative sizes as needed.
Ask the crew
Does everyone's harness fit properly right now — is the D-ring centered between the shoulder blades and are the straps snug without restricting movement?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
