Face Shield vs. Goggles — Decision Guide
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- Safety glasses protect from frontal and side impact but leave gaps above, below, and around the lenses. They are the baseline for most construction tasks.
- Goggles seal against the face and protect from splash, dust, and fumes entering from any direction. They are required for chemical handling, dusty environments, and working overhead.
- Face shields protect the entire face from splashes, sprays, and flying debris — but they are not standalone eye protection. Always wear safety glasses or goggles underneath a face shield.
- Grinding, chipping, and using abrasive wheels require a face shield over safety glasses. The combination protects against both large projectiles (face shield) and small particles (glasses).
- For chemical splash, goggles are superior to face shields because they seal. A face shield alone allows liquid to run underneath and contact the eyes.
Ask the crew
Are you wearing the right level of eye protection for your task today — glasses, goggles, face shield, or a combination?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
