Talking points

  1. All safety eyewear must be ANSI Z87.1 rated — look for the 'Z87' marking on the lens or frame. Non-rated sunglasses are not safety glasses.
  2. Match the protection to the hazard: safety glasses with side shields for impact, goggles for chemical splash, face shields over glasses for grinding.
  3. For welding, use the correct shade number: Shade 10-14 for arc welding (depending on amperage), Shade 3-6 for cutting and brazing.
  4. Safety glasses must fit snugly. Gaps at the top, bottom, or sides allow debris to enter. If your glasses slide down your nose, get a better-fitting pair.
  5. If you get something in your eye, use the nearest eyewash station. Do not rub your eye. Flush for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

Ask the crew

Check your safety glasses right now — are they Z87 rated, and do they fit without gaps?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
