Epoxy and Resin Handling

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Two-component epoxies and resins are used for adhesives, coatings, anchoring bolts, and crack repair. The hardener (Part B) is typically the more hazardous component.
  2. Many hardeners contain amines, which are potent skin sensitizers. Once sensitized, even trace contact causes severe allergic dermatitis — and the sensitivity is permanent.
  3. Nitrile gloves provide protection for most epoxy systems, but some formulations require specialized barrier creams or laminate gloves. Check the SDS.
  4. Avoid skin contact during mixing and application. If epoxy gets on your skin, remove it immediately with soap and water — never use solvents, which drive the chemicals deeper into the skin.
  5. Working with epoxies in an enclosed space, exposure must stay below the limits OSHA sets for air contaminants — in practice that means mechanical ventilation, or respirators when ventilation cannot hold the levels down. Some formulations release volatile compounds that cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation.

Ask the crew

Are we using any epoxies or two-part adhesives today — and do we have the right gloves and ventilation?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
