Entanglement Hazards — Clothing and PPE

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Loose clothing is the number one entanglement hazard near rotating machinery. Shirts should be tucked in, sleeves should be buttoned or rolled above the elbow, and no scarves or loose neckwear.
  2. Long hair must be tied back and secured under a hard hat or hairnet when working near rotating equipment, drills, lathes, or any machinery with exposed moving parts.
  3. Gloves should not be worn when operating drill presses, lathes, or other machines where a rotating bit or spindle could grab the glove material.
  4. Lanyards and retractable tool tethers can become entanglement hazards near rotating equipment. Route them away from moving parts and consider breakaway connectors.
  5. Jewelry — rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches — can be caught by machinery or energized conductors. Remove jewelry before working near rotating equipment or electrical systems.

Ask the crew

Look at yourself right now — is anything you are wearing loose enough to be caught by moving machinery?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
