Elevator and Escalator Installation

Talking points
- Elevator shaft openings at every floor must be guarded with guardrails to prevent falls into the shaft. This applies throughout construction.
- The elevator car hoisting mechanism must be rated for the intended load and tested before use. Overloading the car is prohibited.
- Never ride on top of an elevator car unless specifically authorized and equipped with fall protection tied to an independent anchorage.
- Lockout/tagout is required before any work on elevator or escalator mechanisms. The power supply, hydraulic system, and counterweight must all be secured.
- Communication between workers at the top and bottom of the shaft is essential. Use radios or an intercom system — do not shout.
Ask the crew
Are all elevator shaft openings guarded on every floor right now — or are any guardrails missing?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
