Dust Explosion Awareness

Talking points
- Combustible dust explosions require five elements: fuel (dust), oxygen, ignition source, dispersion in air, and confinement. This is called the dust explosion pentagon.
- Many common materials produce combustible dust: wood, grain, sugar, metal (aluminum, magnesium), coal, plastic, and even some pharmaceuticals. If it burns as a solid, it can explode as a dust.
- Housekeeping is the primary prevention. Dust accumulations of 1/32 inch over 5% of a room's surface area are enough to create an explosion hazard if dispersed into the air.
- Clean up dust with HEPA vacuums or wet methods — never with compressed air or dry sweeping, which disperses the dust into an explosive cloud.
- Ignition sources include electrical sparks, static discharge, hot surfaces, friction, and even overheated bearings in dust collection systems.
Ask the crew
Is there dust accumulation on surfaces in our work area — and are we using the right method to clean it up?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
