Dump Truck and Haul Road Safety
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Berms or guardrails at least mid-axle height are required along the edges of haul roads where a drop-off exists.
- Check overhead clearance before raising the dump bed — contact with power lines, bridges, or structures is a leading cause of dump truck fatalities.
- Walk around the truck before operating. Check tires, brakes, lights, mirrors, and the tailgate. Know the truck's blind spots.
- No riders are permitted in the bed of a dump truck. Material can shift during transport and crush a person.
- On grades, use the appropriate gear and maintain safe following distances. A loaded dump truck takes significantly longer to stop.
Ask the crew
Are there any overhead hazards on our haul route today — power lines, low clearances, or overhanging structures?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
