Drug and Alcohol Awareness on Jobsites

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Impairment from drugs or alcohol dramatically increases the risk of injury — to yourself and to everyone around you. Most companies have a zero-tolerance policy.
  2. Prescription medications can also cause impairment. If your medication warns against operating heavy equipment or causes drowsiness, notify your supervisor before starting work.
  3. If you suspect a co-worker is impaired, say something. This is not about getting someone in trouble — it is about keeping everyone alive.
  4. Workers who hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements, including random, post-accident, and reasonable-suspicion testing.
  5. Employee assistance programs (EAPs) are confidential resources. If you or someone you know needs help, reach out — it's a sign of strength, not weakness.

Ask the crew

Does everyone know how to access the company's EAP — and do you feel comfortable using it if needed?

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
