Disposable vs. Reusable Respirators

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Disposable filtering facepiece respirators (N95, P100) are designed for single use or limited reuse. Once they become damp, soiled, damaged, or difficult to breathe through, they must be replaced.
  2. Reusable elastomeric half-face and full-face respirators accept replaceable cartridges and filters. They provide a better seal, are more comfortable for extended wear, and cost less over time.
  3. Both types require the same regulatory compliance: written program, medical clearance, fit testing, and training. There is no 'voluntary use' exception for elastomeric respirators.
  4. Fit testing must be done with the specific make and model you will wear. An N95 fit test does not qualify you for an elastomeric respirator, and vice versa.
  5. Elastomeric respirators must be cleaned, inspected, and stored properly between uses. Replace valves, straps, and gaskets when they show wear — a respirator with a leaking valve is worse than useless.

Ask the crew

Are you using the right type of respirator for today's exposure — and when was your last fit test on this specific model?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
