Conveyor Safety

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Never reach into a moving conveyor to clear a jam, retrieve material, or make an adjustment. Shut it down and lock it out first.
  2. Emergency stop devices must be accessible along the entire length of the conveyor. Know where every e-stop is located in your work area.
  3. Nip points where the belt meets rollers, pulleys, or idlers must be guarded. These areas can pull in loose clothing, fingers, and hands in a fraction of a second.
  4. No one should ride on a conveyor belt under any circumstances, even when it appears to be moving slowly.
  5. Walkways along conveyors must be kept clear. Tripping near a moving conveyor dramatically increases the chance of contact with moving parts.

Ask the crew

Where are the emergency stops on the conveyors in your work area — can you point to all of them right now?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
