Confined Space Entry — General Industry
General industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- A permit-required confined space has one or more of these characteristics: hazardous atmosphere, engulfment potential, converging walls or floors, or any other recognized serious hazard.
- An entry permit must be completed before anyone enters and must include: the space, date, authorized entrants, attendants, entry supervisor, hazards, controls, and rescue provisions.
- The entry supervisor is responsible for verifying that all permit conditions are met, that monitoring equipment is calibrated, and that rescue services are available.
- Atmospheric testing must follow a specific order: oxygen first (19.5–23.5%), then combustible gases (below 10% LEL), then toxic gases (specific to the space).
- If conditions change or any permit condition is violated, all entrants must exit immediately and the permit is canceled.
Ask the crew
Walk me through the entry permit for today's confined space — is every field filled out, and has the entry supervisor signed off?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
