Concrete Pumping Operations

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Before positioning the pump boom, survey the area for overhead power lines. The boom must maintain required clearance distances at all times.
  2. Pipeline restraints are required at bends and connections to prevent whipping if a coupling fails under pressure.
  3. Clean-out is one of the most hazardous phases — compressed air used to purge the line can propel a sponge ball or concrete with lethal force. Clear the discharge area.
  4. Operators must be trained on the specific pump model, including emergency shutdown procedures and boom operation limits.
  5. Ensure the pump is set up on stable, level ground with outriggers fully deployed. Ground conditions must support the combined weight of the pump and the concrete load.

Ask the crew

Are there any overhead lines near our pump setup today — and is the clean-out area barricaded?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
