Concrete Finishing — Knee and Back Safety
Construction · Ver en español
Talking points
- Knee pads are essential for concrete finishers. Prolonged kneeling on hard surfaces causes bursitis, cartilage damage, and chronic knee pain.
- Use kneeling boards to distribute your weight across a larger area. This reduces point-pressure on the knees and provides a more stable surface.
- Rotate tasks throughout the day to avoid sustained kneeling or bending. Alternate between finishing, forming, and other activities when possible.
- Long-handled finishing tools (bull floats, fresnos, power trowels) reduce the need to bend and kneel. Use them whenever the task allows.
- Stretch before the shift and during breaks. Focus on hamstrings, lower back, and quadriceps — the muscle groups most stressed by finishing work.
Ask the crew
Is everyone wearing knee pads today — and when was the last time we rotated tasks to give knees and backs a break?
Standards this talk is built on
- Section 5(a)(1)
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
