Concrete and Masonry — Formwork

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Formwork and shoring must be designed by a qualified person to support all anticipated loads — wet concrete, workers, equipment, and impact loads.
  2. Do not place concrete into forms until the shoring system has been inspected and verified by a competent person.
  3. Formwork must not be stripped until the concrete has reached sufficient strength to support its own weight and any construction loads. Follow the engineer's stripping schedule.
  4. Stay off formwork and out from under it while it is being erected or stripped — the standard makes formwork be designed, braced, and maintained to carry every anticipated load precisely because a collapse gives no warning. Barricade the area below active form operations.
  5. During cold weather, concrete curing is slower — do not assume the standard stripping schedule applies. Consult with the engineer if temperatures drop below 40°F.

Ask the crew

Has the shoring been inspected today, and do we have the engineer's stripping schedule posted?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
