Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Store and transport cylinders upright, secured with chains or straps to prevent them from falling. A falling cylinder can become a projectile if the valve breaks.
  2. Valve caps must be in place whenever a cylinder is not in active use, being moved, or in storage. The cap protects the valve from damage.
  3. Separate oxygen from fuel gases (acetylene, propane) by at least 20 feet or by a 5-foot-high noncombustible barrier with a 30-minute fire rating.
  4. Never use oil, grease, or petroleum products on oxygen regulators, fittings, or valves. Oxygen under pressure reacts violently with hydrocarbons.
  5. Never use a cylinder as a roller, support, or anything other than its intended purpose. Do not strike cylinders or use them near electrical arcs.

Ask the crew

Are our gas cylinders stored properly right now — upright, secured, caps on, and with proper separation between oxygen and fuel gas?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
