Chemical Protective Clothing (Levels A-D)

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Level D is standard work clothes with safety glasses, gloves, and boots — the minimum for any hazardous site. Level C adds a chemical-resistant suit and air-purifying respirator.
  2. Level B adds a supplied-air respirator (SCBA) to the chemical suit — used when the chemical is identified but atmospheric hazards cannot be controlled with APR alone.
  3. Level A is the highest protection: a fully encapsulating chemical suit with SCBA. It is used for unknown chemicals, high concentrations, or skin-absorbing toxics.
  4. Donning and doffing chemical PPE properly is a trained skill. Cross-contamination during doffing is one of the most common exposure routes — remove the most contaminated layer first and avoid touching the inside surfaces.
  5. Heat stress in chemical protective clothing is severe. Level A and B suits prevent all evaporative cooling. Strict work time limits and active cooling measures are essential.

Ask the crew

If we encountered an unknown chemical spill on site, what level of protection would we need — and do we have it available?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
