Chemical PPE Selection Guide

Talking points

  1. No single glove material protects against all chemicals. Nitrile resists petroleum and many solvents. Butyl rubber resists ketones and esters. Neoprene works for many acids. Always check the SDS.
  2. Breakthrough time is the key specification — it tells you how long the glove material resists the chemical before it permeates through. A glove that lasts 8 hours against one chemical may fail in 10 minutes against another.
  3. Chemical splash goggles seal around the eyes and protect from all angles. Safety glasses with side shields are not adequate for chemical splash hazards.
  4. Chemical-resistant aprons or coveralls protect your body. For highly toxic or concentrated chemicals, a full chemical suit (Levels A through D) may be required.
  5. Respiratory protection must match the chemical — organic vapor cartridges for solvents, acid gas cartridges for acids, particulate filters for dusts. Combination cartridges exist for mixed exposures.

Ask the crew

Check your gloves right now — do you know what chemical they protect against, and what is the breakthrough time?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
