Caught-Between — Vehicle and Equipment Incidents
Construction and general industry · Ver en español
Talking points
- Caught-between incidents occur when a worker is compressed between a vehicle or equipment and a fixed object — a wall, another vehicle, a concrete barrier, or the ground.
- Never position yourself between a reversing vehicle and a fixed object. Operators may not see you, and stopping distance is often longer than the gap you are standing in.
- Loading dock incidents are a common caught-between scenario. Use wheel chocks, dock locks, and visual signals to prevent trailers from moving while workers are between the dock and the trailer.
- Articulated equipment (loaders, dump trucks turning) creates a pinch point between the cab and the chassis. Never stand in the articulation zone of a turning vehicle.
- If you must guide a vehicle into a tight space, stand where the operator can see you and you have a clear escape route. Never position yourself between the vehicle and the object it is approaching.
Ask the crew
Are there any areas on site where workers could be caught between equipment and a fixed object — and how do we prevent it?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
