Bloodborne Pathogens

Talking points
- Bloodborne pathogens — including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C — can be transmitted through contact with infected blood or other potentially infectious materials.
- Practice universal precautions: treat all blood and body fluids as potentially infectious regardless of the source.
- Your employer must have a written exposure control plan and must offer the Hepatitis B vaccine series to workers with occupational exposure — at no cost.
- Use appropriate PPE — gloves at minimum — when providing first aid or cleaning up blood. Wash hands immediately after removing gloves.
- Dispose of contaminated sharps in puncture-resistant, labeled containers. Never recap, bend, or break needles.
Ask the crew
Where is the nearest first aid kit with gloves, and do you know the procedure if you're exposed to blood on the job?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
