Blind Penetration Prevention (Drilling/Cutting)

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Before drilling, cutting, or coring into any floor, wall, or ceiling, scan the area for embedded utilities — electrical conduit, plumbing, gas lines, and post-tension cables.
  2. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic scanners can detect metallic and non-metallic objects within concrete and masonry. Use them before any blind penetration.
  3. Post-tension cables are under extreme stress. Cutting into a post-tension cable releases stored energy explosively and has caused fatalities. Scan for cables before any concrete cutting.
  4. On renovation projects, as-built drawings may be inaccurate or unavailable. Always verify with scanning equipment — do not rely solely on drawings.
  5. If you encounter unexpected resistance, sparks, water, or gas while drilling or cutting, stop immediately. You may have hit a utility that was not detected by scanning.

Ask the crew

Are we drilling or cutting into any surface today — and has it been scanned for embedded utilities and post-tension cables?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
