Bench Grinders and Cut-Off Saws

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Perform a ring test on all abrasive wheels before mounting. A clear ring means the wheel is sound; a dull thud means it is cracked and must be discarded.
  2. The work rest must be within 1/8 inch of the wheel. The tongue guard must be within 1/4 inch. Adjust these before starting — not while the wheel is spinning.
  3. Never exceed the RPM rating on the wheel. A wheel spinning above its rated speed can shatter with explosive force.
  4. Wear a face shield over safety glasses when grinding. Safety glasses alone do not protect against a wheel burst or large flying particles.
  5. Let the grinder reach full speed before applying material to the wheel. Do not force material into the wheel — let the abrasive do the work.

Ask the crew

When was the last time the work rest and tongue guard on our bench grinder were adjusted — and are they within spec?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
