Backing and Spotters

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. A spotter is required whenever the vehicle operator's view to the rear is obstructed. The spotter must be in the operator's line of sight at all times.
  2. Establish clear hand signals or radio communication between the spotter and the operator before backing begins. Both must agree on the signals.
  3. Backup alarms must be functional on all construction vehicles. Test them at the beginning of each shift.
  4. Pedestrians must stay outside the backing zone. If you cannot see the operator's mirrors, the operator cannot see you.
  5. Never walk behind a vehicle that is running or has its reverse lights on. Assume the vehicle will move.

Ask the crew

Do we have spotters assigned for today's backing operations — and have signals been reviewed?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
