Asphalt Paving Safety

Construction · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Hot-mix asphalt is delivered at 275-325°F. Contact with skin causes immediate severe burns. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and boots at all times near hot mix.
  2. Asphalt fumes can irritate the respiratory system. Work upwind when possible, and use respiratory protection if exposure is prolonged or in enclosed areas.
  3. Release agents used to prevent asphalt from sticking must be approved — diesel fuel is not an acceptable release agent due to skin absorption and fire risk.
  4. Traffic exposure is a leading cause of paving crew fatalities. Maintain work zone traffic control per the MUTCD and wear Class 2 or 3 high-visibility clothing.
  5. Heat stress is compounded by the radiant heat from hot asphalt. Increase water intake and take more frequent breaks when paving in hot weather.

Ask the crew

Are we upwind of the paver today, and is everyone wearing the right protective clothing for hot-mix work?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
