Arc Welding Safety

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. Electrode holders must be rated for the maximum amperage of the welder. Using an undersized holder creates a fire and shock hazard.
  2. The work lead (ground clamp) should be attached as close to the weld area as practical. A long return path increases resistance and shock risk.
  3. Welding cables must be inspected for damaged insulation before each use. Exposed conductors can deliver a fatal shock, especially in damp conditions.
  4. Wear dry gloves and clothing. Even low-voltage welding circuits (60-80V open circuit) can kill, particularly in wet or confined conditions.
  5. Provide adequate ventilation — welding fumes contain metals that can cause serious respiratory and neurological damage.

Ask the crew

Is the welding area properly ventilated today — and has the work lead been placed close to the weld point?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
