Arc Flash and Electrical PPE

Construction and general industry · Ver en español

Talking points

  1. An arc flash is an explosive release of energy caused by an electrical fault — temperatures can reach 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, four times the surface of the sun.
  2. NFPA 70E defines approach boundaries: limited, restricted, and prohibited. Only qualified workers may enter the restricted and prohibited boundaries.
  3. Arc-rated clothing is categorized by PPE level (1 through 4) based on the incident energy at the working distance. Your site's arc flash analysis determines the required level.
  4. Never wear synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) when working near energized equipment — they melt onto skin and worsen burn injuries. Use arc-rated cotton or treated fabrics.
  5. Before working on or near energized equipment, review the arc flash label on the panel — it specifies the incident energy, working distance, and required PPE.

Ask the crew

Do you know the arc flash PPE category for the electrical panels in your work area — and where that label is?

Standards this talk is built on

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
