Aerial Lifts and Scissor Lifts

Talking points
- In a boom lift (articulating or telescoping), a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to the basket is required at all times — do not tie off to an adjacent structure.
- In a scissor lift, the guardrail system is the primary fall protection. A harness is generally not required unless the manufacturer or site rules say otherwise.
- Perform a ground-level inspection before each use: check controls, hydraulics, outriggers, tires, and guardrails. Test all functions at ground level before elevating.
- Never stand on the guardrails or use a ladder or step stool inside the basket to gain extra height.
- Be aware of overhead hazards — power lines, structural steel, ceiling obstructions — and maintain safe clearances as you reposition.
Ask the crew
Why do you think boom lifts require a harness but scissor lifts generally don't?
Standards this talk is built on
A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing. It supports the training a standard requires; it does not replace it.
